Elvis Presley Song:
In The Ghetto (1969)
(Music and lyrics by Scott Davis)
Elvis recorded In the Ghetto during the 1969 sessions at American Studios in Memphis, soon after his 1968 comeback special. These sessions produced other hits too, such as Suspicious minds and Don't cry daddy.
The song tells the story of a boy who is born into a poor family in the Chicago ghetto. He's hungry, plays on the street, learns to steal and fight. The song was originally entitled "The Vicious Circle".
Some were initially afraid that since the song had a political message in it, that it would hurt Elvis' reputation. But Elvis loved it and really wanted to record it.
There were initial fears that the song would damage Elvis' reputation for being politically unbiased, but Elvis loved the song and recorded it. Elvis claimed after finally achieving a master take that from now on he would only do songs that he believed in.
Elvis Presley came of age in this song. All songs before were very good songs. This was first one that had meaning.

There are good singers that come and go. For me Elvis is the cream of the crop a fantastic person and sadly he is gone but his music will live forever in our hearts. He was a trully gifted person and we are lucky to heve heard and continue to hear the 'king' sing. 'Long Live the King'
