Elvis Presley Song:

Don't Cry, Daddy (1969)

(Music and lyrics by Scott Davis)

The lyrics of this song are very emotional if you've ever been a parent, talking about the pain of divorce or separation. A little child talks to her crying daddy and asks him not to cry because daddy still has her and little Tommy, and they can find a brand new mommy. Children feel the pain first and hurt the worst, the song mentions. With modern technology, Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie has made a video of 'Don't cry daddy' where she sings it as a duet with her dad. The video uses Elvis' original vocal to which was added new instrumentation and Lisa Marie's part. This video was first presented in August 16, 1997, in a tribute concert that marked the 20th anniversary of Elvis' death. This video has been posted on YouTube; you can see it here:

The chorus: "Don't cry, daddy. Daddy, please don't cry. Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy. Together we'll find a brand new mommy. Daddy, daddy, please laugh again. Daddy, ride us on your back again. Oh, daddy, please don't cry. Oh, daddy, please don't cry." You can find 'Don't Cry Daddy' on the CDs Elvis 2nd to None and 50 Worldwide Gold Hits: Volume 1.

R.I.P. Elvis A Presley, I Loved Your Music & Movies!! Lisa Marie Presley Is A Beautiful Lady !!! I Loved Every Song You Ever Recorded !! My Dad Passed May 31 2010 & I Love & Miss Him Everyday !!

Our family are big ELVIS FANS- watched a tribute tonight, wanted to hear Don't Cry Daddy, saw Lisa with him cute-I really enjoyed it- However, Elvis version reminded me of when my dad left me at a young age and I wanted to go with him-God Bless.

My daddy was a bad daddy. He did things a little girl should never have to go through. Your daddy should be the hero, not the monster. I found out 52 years later he was not my daddy. My uncle Dezzi was my daddy. He would always come and take me to Almer's garage and sometime he would cry when he was taking me home. I would say, "Why are you crying?" He would say, "I hate leaving you here." I would say, "I wish I never had to come here, I wish I could stay with you, uncle Dezzi. I would live in the garage." I could always picture his big blue eyes just like mine. I would say don't cry, uncle Dezzi. And now I know you're my real dad, so don't cry daddy. You can be in heaven and be happy. I'm so happy, you were my hero, and I always loved you for taking me away from the monster, I know, so don't cry daddy.

To: Lisa Marie Presley

I was born in the 70's. I loved and still love your father's music ever since I was 5 years old. When I got to listen to "Don't cry, Daddy" and watched its video (with you and your Dad), two things profoundly struck me: 1) you are indeed the mirror image of your father, and 2) "Don't cry, Daddy" touched me so deeply that I cried (I'm 41 years old and not that many things make me cry that easy.). I myself am married to my beautiful wife and we have a beautiful 6-year old daughter (whom people say is my mirror image). I thank your father and you for sharing yourselves to all.

Respectfully yours,
OJ
I love this song. Elvis sang from his heart & soul everyday. I'm from his home state of Mississippi. love you man. I wish you were still with us. Love to your fans.

My Mom was killed in a car accident in 1964. My sister and I watched the tears flow from my Dad's eyes on a daily basis. My sister was 9 and I was 7 and whether or not it was written about us, it is about us. Thanks to whoever wrote it.
Tommy
I really like this song. It's really heart-touching, and while typing this, honestly, I am crying. This song.. Just reminds me how I love my dad. It's really touching, especially when you really know the lyrics, wow. I wish I could see the duet video, I'll work on that. And really, this song is very amazing, and also the singer, Elvis. I am born 24 years AFTER his death, and he amazes me.
This reminds me of my dad and my uncle, they both were massive Elvis fans including the quif! Any Elvis reminds me of them. Unfortunately my uncle is no longer alive and when my parents divorced we played this and changed tommy to tammy. Gets the tears flowing every time!

This song is about a daughter's unconditional love for her Daddy and her coming to terms with his passing. I am a year younger than Lisa Marie and I remember hearing the news on the car radio that Elvis died as I was riding along with my Daddy.

As a child when she lost her Daddy maybe Lisa Marie thought her Daddy's soul was crying and was sad because he would not be around to raise her and spend time with her. Lisa Marie is comforting her Daddy and telling him it's ok that he is gone because she is alright and will carry on without him. She does not want him to cry and worry that he was not there to raise her and spend time with her. Through this song she redeems her Daddy's suffering.

Obviously, no one can hold back the tears when listening to this graceful duet. We can easily imagine the feelings of love and wonder Elvis would experience if he was with us to react to this moving tribute. He would be filled with such wonder, pride, love and joy for his beautiful daughter Lisa Marie.

Thank you Lisa Marie. We fans loved your Daddy and we love you.

I grew up listening to Elvis. I'm now 43, as my daddy was a huge Elvis fan. My Daddy passed away in 2006 but I will always remember him by all the Elvis songs he taught me. Dad always had Elvis in the house, movies and his eight track tapes in the car and many years of collecting memorabilia 40 or more to be exact. Dad's first 45 record was That's Alright Momma. It was a shock to the country when Elvis died. I was a lil girl watching the tv. But I still enjoy Elvis songs and truly miss my daddy. When I go to his grave site I always sing a little something to him then I say goodbye daddy I'll be here beside you and see you again someday. Nancy D.
I love don't cry daddy because I sing it at the talent show on the last day of junior high and boy do they like it

clarissa
I just wanted to say I love Elvis songs. He sings with such passion, he certainly was one good looking man and so many people were followers of his music. He did leave way too early, as we have now found the same with Michael Jackson. Fantastic voices with looks to kill.
This video of Elvis and his daughter is very moving, Lisa you show such feelings in this video, I'm sure this song was very emotional for you to do at first. Well done, Lisa, it's fantastic, your dad would have been proud of you. I hope there is more of the same to come, although I think this one "Don't cry, daddy" will have the most meaning for you and others who watch it.. Very impressed and love it. Lisa you're so much like your Daddy in looks and with the voice of an angel. Keep up the good work.

Don't Cry Daddy is the best song ever. I am right there with you Lisa Marie. I also lost my Daddy, he was 44 yrs old. And I miss him so very much. The way you are able to sing this song with your Dad is just flat Beautiful.

Donna from Hutchinson, KS.
I love this song. I cry every time I hear it. It makes me think about me and my brother. Our parents divorced when we were young.

The song Don't Cry Daddy is one of the best songs I have ever . It reminds me of my dad so much, his name is Andy and I love him and the song.

I play this song all the time. I love how Lisa Marie has added her dad with the song to her video... so nice. The words are so nice to hear from her late father. A shame he left so soon, they would have played wonderful music together... and went far. We have loved Elvis songs and will forever.

a wonderful song
Don't Cry Daddy really is a lovely song. I was born two weeks after he died, and I really love all his music, and I've always wished he were still alive. This song really makes me upset and want him back when I sing it in karaoke to. To me Elvis will always be the king of rock and roll to me, because I can feel his music running through me.

I have been listening to and watching Elvis since I was a little girl. My Dad was a very big huge fan of Elvis. He used to always joke that Elvis got his looks from him, seeing how Elvis was born on his birthday after him, which was Jan 8, 1933 was my dad's. He's gone now but every time I hear this song, it gives me another peice of memory of Dad. Love ya Elvis, and thank you Lisa. You are great.

Sue
I love this song. It reminds me of my dad, it's our song we always sing it together :)

SHAUNA
I love so much this song and it's really touched my heart. I have been listening to lots of songs in my life but I never heard this kinds of song in my life. I do not know my dad because when my dad passed away, I was 9 months old baby. I am now a man 36 years old. For me, Elvis is one of the best singers and handsome man in the world.

Kam
I am 57 and Elvis has always been in my life. My son and daughter have been brought up with Elvis. When I heard Lisa Maria singing duet with her dad, I was in tears, it is beautiful. I wonder if we could buy it on CD with "In the Ghetto"?

Lynne Mather
My Father passed away in Februrary and the only time that I ever seen him cry was when all 5 of his children got together to see what he wanted done when he passed away and one of my sisters kissed him on the forehead and he started to cry and when I heard the song I started crying thinking about my dad and his birthday is coming up really soon.
I think the song is great but it makes me cry because my dad died on the 6th of June so I wish no one else has lost their dad or grandad who both loved Elvis Presley.
I never thought I'd come to this point of falling in love with you singing your songs! Many impostors have tried to copy your style but can't produce the real Elvis way! If you are out there reading this, Elvis, which I have discovered just yesterday that you are still alive today, hope you can read this... Love you Elvis!!!!!!!

I have loved listening to Elvis since I was a little girl, (I am 22 now) he just had a fantastic voice & such a great range. This song really hits me on an emotional level each time I hear it! It is very touching & I do not think that anyone ever could or ever will sing it better than he did!!

Ashley

Elvis was my first love !! I remember as a young girl listening to all his albums and watching his movies. I had the chance to live in Memphis for one year and I really enjoyed Graceland.

nicolathomson
WHEN I FIRST SEEN THIS I JUST FOUND IT SO SAD. HE LEFT THIS WORLD TOO EARLY AND HE SHOULD OF BEEN SINGING LIVE WITH LISA

TONY FROM WALES UK
I like this song while it's so emotionally and if I heard it Lisa Mrie sing this song with her daddy I was very sad because of the circumstances of her daddy's too soon death. She was a little child when he died. This song means to her, I think she misses her dad so much. I was four years old when Elvis died and I remember this day if it was yesterday. Until this day I became an Elvis fan-
forever...

gabi

This song was so very instrumental in my life. My parents divorced when I was a child and my baby brother's name was Tommy. So I sang this song so many times to my daddy, until he passed away when I was 12. I also loved the song In The Ghetto. I just found this site as I was looking for Elvis photo's to use in a In Memory Of photo I'm doing for a family who lost their daughter, she was murdered at the age of 14. She just loved Elvis so I thought that would be a great background. And then I found this site.

Thank You, Kathie Raley

velma carter
I like this song because it reminds me of when my mum and dad split up he started crying.

The bootleg of Elvis singing this with Lisa should be studio-produced... an instant hit. RCA dropped the ball not signing Lisa and now she's with Capitol. My son and I sang this as a duet. One of Elvis' tender best!

BigJohn
This song is one of my dad's favorite songs, and now I love it too. My dad's a very big Elvis fan and he still loves him as the days go on. My dad is still alive.
