This song went to be #1 on the Billboard Top 100 for 11 consecutive 
weeks after its release, and  is considered by many one of the top
hits of all times. 'Dont be cruel' is honored with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award (inducted in 2002).

It was written by Otis Blackwell, a famous black songwriter
who wrote many hits for Elvis. 

The main character in Dont Be Cruel wants his girl 
to at least call him with telephone because he's 
sitting home all alone. He wants the girl to forget
the past in case he's made her mad by somethign he said
 and look ahead into the bright future.  He doesn't want
 them to be apart but wants his love to come to him.
He wants them to walk up to the preacher and say, "I do".

The best rock song from Elvis is "Dont be Cruel". When Sam Phillips heard it, he said: "they got it right." I believe he meant the right song for Elvis. I also really like: That's When you Heartaches Begin. Are you Lonesome Tonight. and many more, but these are standouts for me. Ernie
