In this song a couple has drifted apart. The man is asking
the lady if she is lonesome, missing him, or if the chairs
in her parlor seem empty - or if he should come back again.
The middle part of the song is spoken instead of sung.
He says the world is like a stage, and their love was like a play
with various acts - she seemed to be acting through it and lying.
But he'd rather go back to her to hear her lies than to go on
living without her. If she won't come back to him,
he mentions, "They can bring the curtain down".
You'll find "Are you lonesome tonight" on the CD
50 Worldwide Gold Hits: Volume 1.
The chorus line says:
"Is your heart filled with pain?
Shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?"

This must be the saddest song I've ever heard. Because my dad was a HUGE fan this was one of the songs he sang often. I still believe when he sang it, he dedicated to my mom as they got divorced. When he sang it, I could see the pain in his eyes (same with Elvis). He loved my mom so much, and never got involved again. He took their love once shared to his grave. (Miss you Elvis...miss you dad...)
